“Courtside with a bad bitch.” Desiigner has returned with yet another single. “Formula” is aptly titled, following the guidelines of the Brooklyn rapper’s most successful singles up to this point. Using a good helping of auto-tune, Desiigner delivers a catchy hook over a dynamic, flute-driven instrumental from Niagra’s own Murda Beatz.
“Courtside with a bad bitch,” goes the refrain, which is reflected in the cover art depicting fellow Kanye collaborator Travis Scott seated front row at a basketball game alongside mega-celebrity Kylie Jenner, who he happens to be dating. Released on SoundCloud, the track features a caption from Desiigner which hints that his official debut album is not all that far away.
“LOD ALBUM COMiiNG SOONER THAN YOU THiiNK,” he writes, abbreviating his previously announced title The Life Of Desiigner. The name resembles the Kanye LP on which Desiigner made his breakthrough appearing on tracks “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 2” and “Freestyle 4.”
His “Panda” single went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 a little while later, and he’s since established himself as a reliable singles artist with regular track releases. He revealed the cover art for his upcoming album last week, which means that LOD truly can’t be too far away. The question now is which of his recent singles will appear on the project?
Most of the rapper’s tracks, though filled with proper bars, also feature a fair amount of melody. Desiigner explained this approach in a recent interview with the Breakfast Club. “This was always my swag,” he said. “To me, I think it just evolved until it started getting bigger and bigger and better. I knew I was a harmony god.
I came from singing. I always came from knowing harmonies. So just putting it together and making it right.” A few of his greatest melodic achievements have come in his “Tiimmy Turner” XXL Freshman freestyle, his cover of The Temptations “My Girl,” though we expect to hear a lot more when his album arrives.
